This page provides background information, source materials, and media resources relating to the dispute between Youras Ziankovich and Wise US Inc.
The dispute concerns the restriction and closure of a financial account following attempted humanitarian transactions connected to Belarusian civil society organizations and former political prisoners.
The matter was originally filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas and is currently pending before the American Arbitration Association (AAA).
Case Overview
This dispute arises from Wise’s decision to restrict and ultimately terminate access to financial services after transactions involving organizations connected to former political prisoners from Belarus.
Claimant alleges that Wise relied on Belarus-related identifiers as proxy risk factors, resulting in discriminatory treatment, denial of financial services, and reputational harm.
Wise denies all allegations and maintains that its actions were lawful, justified, and consistent with its contractual and regulatory obligations.
Why This Matter Is Newsworthy
The dispute raises broader questions that extend beyond a single account:
- whether financial institutions may rely on nationality-related indicators when assessing customer risk;
- how sanctions compliance programs affect refugees, dissidents, and former political prisoners;
- whether lawful humanitarian transactions can be blocked through automated or proxy-based risk systems;
- the transparency and accountability of account restriction and account closure decisions;
- the growing use of private arbitration clauses in disputes involving financial technology companies.
